Scholarships Support President Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative

CIEE is excited to announce that since its inception in March 2012, the Global Access Initiative (GAIN) has awarded more than $130,000 in scholarships and grants to college and university students interested in CIEE’s Study Abroad in China programs. These scholarships and grants directly support President Barack Obama’s “100,000 Strong” initiative, which seeks to significantly increase the number and diversify the composition of American students studying abroad in China.

New Faculty Publication

Karen Rodríguez, Ph.D., professor at the Universidad de Guanajuato and director of CIEE Mexico, has published a new book titled, Small City on a Big Couch: A Psychoanalysis of a Provincial Mexican City. Rubén Gallo of Princeton University has called the book, "a must read for those interested in contemporary Mexico.”

CIEE Scholarships to 18 U Wisconsin Students

Eighteen University of Wisconsin–Madison students have been awarded CIEE study abroad scholarships. Applied to upcoming summer and fall programs, these awards will cover a combined total of $30,500. Fifteen of the awardees received CIEE’s Global Access Initiative (GAIN) Scholarship, two have received the Robert B. Bailey Scholarship and one received a John E. Bowman Travel Grant.

This June, CIEE will host an inaugural Faculty Summer Summit for faculty from CIEE member institutions at our world headquarters in Portland, Maine. During this summit we will discuss trends in key disciplines, current barriers to student mobility, and ways to enhance the study abroad experience. Deadline to apply is April 20.

CIEE at Portland Children's Film Festival

The festival brings quality films to Maine and encourages local children to explore their own interests in filmmaking through hands-on programming.

In CIEE’s continued commitment to the Portland community, Digital Media Copy Writer, Alex Coppola, kicked off the festival's workshop series with Around the World in 90 Minutes: People, Places and Travel through Stop Motion. Joined by a group of seven up-and-coming filmmakers–aged 7 to 10–they created a short film chronicling a journey around the globe.


CIEE VP for Academic Affairs Honored

CIEE is excited to announce that Dr. Michael Vande Berg, Vice President for Academic Affairs, has been named one of two Forum on Education Abroad’s 2012 Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award winners. The award was presented to Dr. Vande Berg at a ceremony during the Forum’s Annual Conference this March. Read More.

CIEE joined The University of Maine School of Law and the Justice for Women Lecture Series to sponsor a very special visit to Portland by The Honorable Unity Dow, an international human rights advocate, best-selling novelist, and the first female Judge of Botswana’s High Court. Read More.
