CIEE Creates New Global Architecture and Design Program

Starting in spring 2014, CIEE will offer a new Global Architecture and Design study abroad program focused on exploring the intersection of innovation, technology, and thought to develop the tools to help cities of today become self-sufficient “future cities.”

Semester programs will be offered at CIEE Study Centers in Barcelona, Spain; Berlin, Germany; and Prague, Czech Republic. A four-week version  will be offered at the new CIEE Study Center in New York City in summer 2014.

CIEE and Diversity Abroad Launch Diversity Summit

CIEE and Diversity Abroad have partnered to create a series of collaborative workshops for study abroad professionals aimed at increasing access to and diversity in study abroad.

The goal of the initiative is to develop real, actionable ideas and solutions to overcoming the three leading barriers to study abroad—cost, curriculum, and culture—that can be used to increase participation in education abroad by a wide and diverse population of students.

Ken Nealy

Ken Nealy, who teaches the Policy, Decision Making and Law and Intercultural Communication and Negotiations courses at the CIEE Shanghai Study Center, recently helped coordinate a visit for a Congressional Black Caucus delegation from the US Congress to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

Abhinav Nangia, a 2008 graduate of Northeastern University and a former CIEE program participant, is the co-founder of reweave, a non-profit that's helping change lives around the world. 

reweave is a social impact network that helps connect passionate people and organizations with under-resourced social enterprises. Nangia and his team help people invest in, volunteer with, and purchase goods from the 15 start-ups they currently support.

CIEE Civic Leadership Summit Off to a Great Start

Civic Leadership Summit 2013

This week, 60 Work & Travel USA participants, representing over 20 countries, gathered in Washington, D.C. for the inaugural CIEE Civic Leadership Summit.

The Civic Leadership Summit brings together passionate, young leaders from around the world for a dynamic exchange on global society and culture. Liberian Students Join Leadership Academy

The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa and the CIEE Leadership Academy have partnered to send two Liberian high school students abroad this summer. The Foundation seeks “to promote and facilitate activities and initiatives aimed at promoting peace and reconciliation through the holistic participation of local communities.”

The organization’s founder—Leymah Gbowee—was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for her contributions to the women’s peace movement which helped bring about an end to the Second Liberian Civil War. Gbowee spoke at CIEE headquarters in Portland this past March.

CIEE Launches New Camp Program

CIEE has been approved by the U.S. Department of State to sponsor the J-1 Camp Counselor program. As a result, we are launching Camp Exchange USA, a new exchange program that brings experienced international participants to the U.S. to serve as educators, leaders, and support staff to children at American summer camps!

 With the recent changes to J-1 visa regulations, it’s more important than ever to offer expanded options for international students and professionals to experience American culture firsthand. As the leader in international education and exchange for more than 65 years, CIEE is in a unique position to deliver these options.

 Noble Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee

This March, CIEE will host Portland-area high school students and their teachers for a candid conversation with Liberian peace activist and 2011 Noble Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee. Gbowee will share her personal story of promoting peace, security, and girls’ and women’s rights, education, and leadership around the globe.
