TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL LEADERSHIP EXPERT ERIK QUALMAN AND FOUNDER AND CEO OF BLACK GIRLS CODE KIMBERLY BRYANT TO HEADLINE 2017 CIEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

We’re thrilled to announce technology and digital leadership expert and best-selling author Erik Qualman, and Founder and CEO of Black Girls CODE, Kimberly Bryant as the featured speakers for the 2017 CIEE Annual Conference, November 8-11, in Austin, Texas.

At the JW Marriott Hotel, Qualman and Bryant will present to an audience of more than 500 scholars, leaders, and influencers in international education their perspectives and experience on this year’s theme, Born Digital: Embracing Technology to Enhance International Education.

During the conference’s Opening Plenary on November 8, "Socialnomics” author Qualman will bring his expertise in digital leadership to the world of international education and explore how educators can harness the power of technology to reach the digital-native generation and increase experiential learning. Qualman educates audiences around the world with his talks on digital leadership and reputation.

On November 10, during the Annual Luncheon, Bryant will share the inspiring story of her journey pursuing math and science as a young minority woman to creating Black Girls CODE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the face of technology by introducing girls of color (ages 7-17) to technology and computer science. Black Girls CODE is now an international organization with 10 chapters across the U.S. and in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This year’s conference theme, Born Digital: Embracing Technology to Enhance International Education, furthers the goal of breaking the barriers of cost, curriculum, and culture to increase access to study abroad by all students. Through its Generation Study Abroad pledge, CIEE is committed to providing $20 million in scholarships and grants to American students, to sponsoring passports for 10,000 students, and to offering an annual $20,000 grant to college faculty to support innovative approaches to custom study abroad programs.

Qualman is the author of six books, including “Socialnomics,” “What Happens in Vegas Stays on YouTube,” “How to Sell on LinkedIn,” “Digital Leader,” and “What Happens on Campus Stays on YouTube.” “Socialnomics” made Amazon's #1 Best Selling List for the U.S., Japan, U.K., Canada, Portugal, Italy, China, Korea, and Germany. “What Happens in Vegas Stays on YouTube” has been adopted by top universities and global brands and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Qualman has given innovative lectures in 47 countries to over 25 million people including employees at Coach, Chase, Sony Playstation, IBM, Facebook, ADP, Starbucks, Raytheon, Chrysler, TEDx, Nokia, Google, and others. He was an MBA Professor at the Hult International Business School and for the past 18 years has helped grow the digital capabilities of companies including Cadillac, EarthLink, EF Education First, Yahoo, Travelzoo, and AT&T. Qualman holds a BA from Michigan State University and an MBA from The University of Texas. In 2011 Qualman was honored as the Michigan State Alum of the Year. He was Academic All-Big Ten in basketball at Michigan State University.

At a young age, Bryant developed a passion for math and science, which led her to study engineering at Vanderbilt University. In both her academic and professional life, she often found herself the only minority. Despite her vastly underrepresented status, Bryant went on to enjoy a successful 25+ year professional career as a leader in both pharmaceutical and biotech industries for various Fortune 100 companies such as Genentech, Merck, and Pfizer.

When her daughter Kai began to pursue an education in math and science, Bryant discovered little had changed since her days as a student. African-American women were still sparsely represented in the field of technology and opportunities were limited. Determined to “change the face of technology,” Bryant created Black Girls CODE, a nonprofit dedicated to introducing girls of color (ages 7-17) to the field of technology and computer science with a concentration on entrepreneurial concepts. As Oprah Winfrey describes it, Black Girls CODE is “the first organization of its kind.” Black Girls CODE is now an international organization with 10 chapters across the U.S. and in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Bryant serves on the National Champions Board for the National Girls Collaborative Project, and the National Board of the NCWIT K-12 Alliance. She has been nationally recognized as a social innovator for her work on increasing opportunities for women and girls in the tech industry. For her work supporting communities in the San Francisco Bay Area, she was honored with the prestigious Jefferson Award for Community Service. She has also been recognized by Business Insider as one of the “25 Most Influential African-Americans in Technology” and was named to The Root 100 and the Ebony Power 100 lists. Bryant is also an Apple STEM Partner, Aspen Institute Fellow, recipient of Smithsonian’s American Ingenuity Award in Social Progress, White House Champion of Change, and Toyota Standing O-Vation.

Actress and Human Rights Activist Mira Sorvino and Paul Quinn College President Michael Sorrell to Headline 2016 CIEE Annual Conference

We’re excited to announce Academy Award-winning actress and human rights activist Mira Sorvino and Paul Quinn College President Michael Sorrell as the featured speakers for the 2016 CIEE Annual Conference, November 16-19, in Los Angeles.

At the Loews Hollywood Hotel, Sorvino and Sorrell will offer inspiration to an audience of more than 500 scholars, thinkers, and leaders in international education who are working to expand global education in the 21st century.

During the conference’s opening presentation on November 16, Sorvino will share her perspectives on study abroad as a critical influencer in students’ lives, including her own. Sorvino studied abroad with CIEE in Beijing, China, while a student at Harvard University, an experience that helped to influence the roles she has pursued in her acting career and her life-long activism around human and women’s rights.

On November 18, during the conference’s Annual Luncheon, Sorrell will share his lessons in overcoming barriers and getting things done that others say can’t be done. In a few short years as president, Sorrell transformed the struggling Paul Quinn College – a historically black college in Dallas, Texas, on the brink of losing accreditation – into one of the most innovative small colleges in America that is rapidly becoming a model for urban higher education.

This year’s conference theme, Study Abroad 2016: Partnering with Faculty to Expand Global Education, is part of CIEE’s Generation Study Abroad pledge to break through the barriers of cost, curriculum, and culture to increase access to study abroad by all students. In support of this initiative, CIEE has committed to providing $20 million in scholarships and grants to American students, to sponsoring passports for 10,000 students, and to offering an annual $20,000 grant to college faculty to support innovative approaches to custom study abroad programs.

Mira Sorvino, Academy Award-Winning Actress and Human Rights Activist
Mira Sorvino is an actress best known for her commercial hits, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” “Mimic,” “The Replacement Killers,” and “Summer of Sam.” Her breakthrough film was Woody Allen's “Mighty Aphrodite,” which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996 among many other honors.

Sorvino is an ardent supporter of human and women’s rights causes, having spent much of her career pursuing roles that marry her love of acting with her social-activist concerns. Sorvino starred in the critically acclaimed Holocaust drama, “The Grey Zone”; the 2005 miniseries, “Human Trafficking,” which explored the lives of women and children who have been abducted and forced into slavery; and the 2012 play, “Trade in Innocents,” about a couple that joins the fight to end the trafficking of children after the loss of their own child.

Sorvino is the official ambassador for the worldwide human rights organization Amnesty International's "Stop Violence Against Women" program. Her work with Amnesty was recognized at the Artivist Film Festival, which acknowledges socially conscious filmmakers, activist celebrities, and charitable organizations. In March of 2006, she was honored with Amnesty International's Artist of Conscience Award, which is given to those who have displayed strong philanthropic and humanist efforts. Through her work with Amnesty, she has lobbied Congress on such topics as human trafficking and the atrocities in Darfur, Sudan. Additionally, as United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Global Fight against Human Trafficking, in 2013 Sorvino traveled to Cambodia with the Freedom Project to develop an exposé on child sex trafficking, which resulted in “Every Day in Cambodia: A CNN Freedom Project Documentary.”

Michael J. Sorrell is the 34th president of Paul Quinn College. Under his leadership, the school has been transformed into one of the most innovative small colleges in America and is rapidly becoming a model for urban higher education by focusing on academic rigor, experiential learning, and entrepreneurship.

Sorrell is active in the community, serving as a trustee or director for Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, the College Board, Amegy Bank, Teach for America, Earth Day Texas, Dallas Regional Chamber, the Dallas Foundation, and the Tate Distinguished Lecture Series and the Department of Education Policy and Leadership for the Simmons School of Education at Southern Methodist University. He is a sought-after writer and speaker, regularly contributing editorials featured in the “Dallas Morning News” and the “Huffington Post.” Additionally, his TEDx talk on the New Urban College Model is critically acclaimed.

The “Washington Monthly” recently named Sorrell one of America’s 10 Most Innovative College Presidents. Additionally, he has been awarded the 2012 HBCU Male President of the Year by “HBCU Digest”; the Excellence in Education Distinguished Alumni Award from his high school, St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, Illinois; and the A. Kenneth Pye Award for Excellence in Education from the Alumni Association of Duke University’s School of Law.

CIEE Announces 2016 and 2017 Annual Conference Themes

CIEE announced today the themes for its 69th and 70th annual conferences on international education.

CIEE’s 2016 Annual Conference will focus on the importance of engaging faculty in the development of international education programs and will be held in Los Angeles, CA, November 16-19, 2016.

“Faculty are the heart and soul of the university, shaping each institution’s curriculum, research agenda, service initiatives, and serving as student mentors and role models. Today, trends in international education are calling faculty from every academic discipline to lead the development of new international programs in areas such as business, education, health sciences, and STEM disciplines that augment and complement more traditional international programs in the humanities, languages, and social sciences. Facilitating that trend will require a rich collaboration between faculty and experienced study abroad professionals who are well versed in developing and implementing high-quality international programs,” says James P. Pellow, Ed.D., president and CEO of CIEE.

CIEE’s 69th Annual Conference theme, “Study Abroad 2016: Partnering with Faculty to Expand Global Education,” will serve as a springboard for a multi-part dialogue dealing with critical issues shared by study abroad professionals and the constituencies they serve. Conference presenters will be encouraged to submit proposals that demonstrate best practices for collaborating with faculty to expand the portfolio of high-quality international programs for students from all academic disciplines.

“The trends in study abroad are clear,” says Maritheresa Frain, Ph.D., executive vice president for study abroad at CIEE. “For the last two decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of faculty leading study abroad programs, as well as an increase in non-traditional academic disciplines interested in international programs including global programs focusing on business, STEM majors, and health sciences. In response, we need to expand our conversation and share best practices for supporting these trends, especially in the area of collaborating with faculty.”

CIEE’s 2016 Annual Conference will serve as an opportunity for universities to share best practices in how faculty and study abroad professionals collaborate on advancing institutional objectives. Questions that might be addressed include: How do we build a more robust framework for collaboration? How can study abroad professionals collaborate with faculty to help students from all socio-economic backgrounds, and all academic majors, participate in high-quality study abroad programs? How are students pursuing the most challenging academic majors finding ways to study abroad, with faculty leading the charge? How can we jointly overcome the primary barriers to study abroad: cost, curriculum, and culture? How are innovative institutions leveraging technology to facilitate and enhance faculty-directed international study?

2017 Annual Conference will Highlight the Use of Technology to Enhance International Education
With preparations well under way for 2016, CIEE also announced that their 2017 Annual Conference will center on how best to leverage and manage technology to achieve learning and program goals. While many faculty and study abroad professionals loath the proliferation of technology and smart phones in university settings and yearn for a return to the days when students were completely offline during international programs, our reality is that the world has changed and is interconnected like no other time in history. Today’s world is connected via the internet, social media, and a 24/7 news cycle. Our students travel with the world in their pockets. Our challenge is to find the most positive ways to embrace technology to enrich international learning opportunities for a generation that was born after the founding of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The 2017 Annual Conference, “Born Digital: Embracing Technology to Enhance International Education,” will be held in Austin, Texas (November 8–11, 2017).

World Trade Center Redevelopment Master Planner Daniel Libeskind and Google Chief Education Evangelist Jaime Casap to Headline 2015 CIEE Annual Conference

CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange is excited to announce visionary architect Daniel Libeskind and Google Chief Education Evangelist Jaime Casap as the featured speakers for its 2015 CIEE Annual Conference, November 4-7, in Berlin.

Respected innovators in their fields, Libeskind and Casap will offer inspiration to an audience of more than 500 scholars, thinkers, and leaders in international education who are working to reimagine, rebuild, and reinvent study abroad to give all students the tools they need to thrive in the 21st century.

During the conference’s opening presentation on November 4, Libeskind will share his architectural vision and use his own work as an example of how developing and shaping big ideas can lead to transformation. Casap will share his thoughts on the powerful role of technology in revolutionizing education and transforming today’s students into tomorrow’s global citizens during the conference’s Annual Luncheon on November 6.

This year’s conference theme, The Reinvention of Study Abroad: Setting the Course for 2020, is part of CIEE’s commitment to Generation Study Abroad™, an initiative started by the Institute of International Education to double the number of students studying abroad to 600,000 by the year 2020. In support of this initiative, CIEE has pledged to provide $20 million in scholarships and grants to American students, to sponsor passports for 10,000 students, and to offer an annual $20,000 grant to college faculty to support innovative approaches to custom study abroad programs.

Daniel Libeskind, Architect, Artist, and Professor
An international figure in architecture and urban design, Daniel Libeskind is renowned for his ability to evoke cultural memory in buildings of equilibrium-defying contemporaneity. Informed by a deep commitment to music, philosophy, and literature, Libeskind aims to create architecture that is resonant, original, and sustainable. Born in Lód’z, Poland, in 1946, Libeskind immigrated to the United States as a teenager.

Libeskind established his architectural studio in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum in Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. Daniel Libeskind’s practice is involved in designing and realizing a diverse array of urban, cultural, and commercial projects internationally.

Jaime Casap, Chief Education Evangelist, Google, Inc.
Jaime Casap is chief education evangelist at Google, Inc., where he works with educational organizations around the world to help them find ways to continuously improve the quality of education by utilizing and enabling technology capabilities. Born and raised as a first-generation American to a single mother on welfare in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, Casap understands and appreciates the power education has on changing the destiny of a family in just one generation.

In addition to his role at Google, Casap serves on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Science Foundation, New Global Citizens, Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, and serves as an advisor to dozens of organizations focused on education and access, including South by Southwest EDU (SXSWedu,) the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and is on the GSV Advisors Advisory Board. He is also an adjunct professor at Arizona State University, where he teaches classes and guest lectures.

Study Abroad Leaders Break Barriers at 2014 CIEE Conference in Baltimore as CIEE Pledges More Access and Choice

CIEE hosted more than 500 study abroad professionals and administrators from institutions of higher education at its 2014 Annual Conference, November 19-22, in Baltimore.

 “Breaking Barriers: Cost, Curriculum, Culture” was chosen as this year’s conference theme to highlight the fact that only 10 percent of U.S. students study abroad. With an aim toward attracting more students to this enriching experience, conference participants took part in interactive sessions, presentations, and networking events to generate new ways to make study abroad more affordable, integrate international perspectives into curriculum, and communicate the benefits of international education.

CIEE’s pledge to support the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Generation Study Abroad™ high-profile initiative was the highlight of the conference. IIE has challenged those involved in the field of study abroad to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad to 600,000 by 2020. To make it financially easier for students to do so, CIEE has committed to awarding $20 million in scholarships and grants to American students by the end of the decade. Further, CIEE will fund passports for 10,000 students and give an annual $20,000 faculty grant to support innovative approaches to study abroad.

To address curricular barriers, the study abroad leader also pledged to add more International Faculty Development Seminars and expand its Faculty-Led and Custom Programs. To break cultural barriers, CIEE will launch a media campaign to encourage study abroad by sharing students’ success stories, expand its work with minority-serving institutions to 100 schools by 2020, and give 25 full scholarships to students with disabilities in 2015, in partnership with Mobility International USA.

In his opening speech, CIEE President and Chief Executive Officer James P. Pellow, Ed.D., noted that last year, the number of international students coming to the United States increased 8 percent to 886,000, including 274,000 Chinese. But the number of U.S. students studying abroad increased just 2 percent to 289,000.

 “There are three times as many international students coming to the United States as we are sending abroad,” noted Pellow. “And the gap is growing. Next year, the number of Chinese studying in the United States is expected to surpass the number of all U.S. students studying abroad.”

Presentations included addresses by Freeman Hrabowski, Ph.D., president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), who spoke the importance of bold ideas and experimentation as he shared success stories from UMBC; Allan Goodman, president and CEO of IIE, who shared the latest data on study abroad participation and how we can improve them; and Michele Norris, National Public Radio host and special correspondent and leader of The Race Card Project, who shared provocative thoughts on how we approach race and diversity in America that tie into cultural barriers to study abroad.

The conference also featured the concluding session of the Diversity Abroad Future Leaders Summit. CIEE and Diversity Abroad co-hosted these events to share best practices and develop ideas to increase diversity in study abroad. During the last of three sessions held this year, 20 young leaders of change in international education explored new ways to balance study abroad cost and value, examine program systems and structures to minimize costs, and give students and parents the tools to make study abroad attainable.

 “Studying abroad is one of the most important steps young people can take to ensure success in school and beyond,” said CIEE Chief Academic Officer for Study Abroad David F. Fougere. “Yet, many students are unable or choose not to pursue an international education experience. It’s critical that we change this, and at this year’s conference, we took huge strides toward making study abroad a reality for many more students.”
